Campbell Martial Arts

March 13th, 2013

In an old brick building, up on a hill. Located just outside the Soup City, Campbell Ohio sits what I personally consider a hidden gem in the mixed martial arts world. Campbell Martial Arts, is like that one girlfriend/boyfriend you dated years ago, decided to end it, then you see her/him years later and shes/hes developed into an amazing piece of work. Newly appointed Shihan, Andrew Boehlke started Campbell Martial Arts 9 years in the basement of St. Lucy’s Church.

With just a hand full of guys, and now has parlayed that into a gym that has 2 current mixed martial arts champions, 1 former champion, and 4 black belts in charge or daily teachings. Aside from day to day training and operations, Andy is prepping for his last hoorah in his original love affair, of Karate. In July Andy will give it one last go, in hopes of capturing a world title in Orlando at the US Open World Karate Championships. A 16 year karate career, over 80 full contact fights, 6 years of wrestling, and dabbles in some jui-jitsu, Andy is a well qualified teacher/trainer/mentor to the kids and adults that he encounters on a daily basis. And I almost forgot about him being a licensed USA Boxing Coach as well.

Talking to Andy, I`ve asked the question, Whats the current state and future have in store for CMA? His response, “in the future, were gonna train more champions, and continue to grow”……hes obviously short with media, hes notoriously humble for his accomplishments. Now were gonna talk about Team CMA MMA, 7 years ago, the love for mixed martial arts blossomed. Starting the MMA program, Andy found that applying his strongest suit, Shotokan Karate, was like a match made in heaven. In 7 years, Team CMA has successfully stayed as one of the Elite gyms in the tri-county area, possibly in Northeast Ohio. (I`ll have my people check on that) With people driving from, Greenville PA, Salem OH, Sharon/Hermitage PA, hes obviously doing something right! With daily attendance hovering anywhere from 10-25 guys nightly, classes are big, rooms are small. Sounds congested and chaotic right? But its not, with 3 to 4 instructors aside from Andy, there is alot of 1 on 1 learning. With kids classes in karate and wrestling and adult classes in Karate, Jui-Jitsu, Wrestling, Striking, there is always something going on! He`s (Andy) has never settled for par for his guys, bringing in the areas best in Boxing, Jitsu, Judo, Karate. With a resident pro boxer Darnell Boone, and a world class Boxing coach in Sammy Calderon. Jiu-Jitsu is held down by Tom Scala, Shotokan Karate is taught by Shihan Andy, and black belts John Moran, Michael “Taco” Cardona, and Davis Oracio Jr. With seminars by Jason Dent, Donny Walker, Mark Coleman, Wes Sims, Andrew Law and some others, you can see that’s these guys are top notch in their respective crafts.

Now here`s what i love about the place, EVERYONE HAS NO EGO! Champions train with 1st day guys. If there is something someone doesn’t understand or cant quite nail down, I personally have seen no less the 6 guys stop to help. That in itself is an amazing quality, taught and instilled in everyone who walks thru the famed double doors under the huge Campbell Martial Arts sign. As you read this article, you might say “wait Mr. Frohman, your sounding super biased” i`d honestly tell you, you’re right. Its a blue collar gym, with blue collar people. A tireless work ethic, combined with a heart the big as the state of Ohio, how can you not root for these guys, this gym? You have seen these guys, you know, that fight show you went to, you see the sea of Black and Red, the “tunnel”, the chants… Many guys who fight there tell me its such a rush to know that when the announcer calls your name, you hear the chants, your walked to the cage with 30 of your closest brothers, the last thing you see before the cage is closed, the first thing you see when you walk out, is your team, your family! Now with all that being said, if your thinking about whats the prices? The schedule? I got ya covered!

Cheney`s Words of Wisdom

June 8th, 2012

“Fighting isn’t always about winning or loosing, its about how courage you have and how much your willing to take and put on the line. Sometimes the man who looses is gains victory within themselves to fight for more than just glory. Too many people i know have the wrong idea about what being in the cage, or the boxing ring or the wrestling mat is really about. A mans loss is also his gain and having pure heart and faith in something greater than yourself is what its all about. The man who steps ups and shows what kind of man he is on the mat or in the ring or in the cage is stronger than the man who was too scared too. fighting is not about winning or loosing its about how much heart, how much faith and how much courage you have win or loose you always have the title and it imprinted in your heart of being a fighter in one way or another.”
